On 14th November, REG hosted ‘Mind Matters’, a panel event, in support of ‘Movember’. The event focused on the challenges men’s face regarding mental health at work and how we can work together to better support the wellbeing of our male colleagues.
The event started with Zoë Parsons, Marketing Manager, introducing the topic, highlighting the importance of raising awareness and sharing some stats. Charley Fryers, Marketing Executive, then introduced stigmas and shared the findings from REG’s research on the barriers influencing men being reluctant to seek help.
The panelists then delivered some thought provoking discussions, drawing on the challenges men face regarding mental health at work and how we can break down those barriers, the strategies we can implement in the workplace to better support our male colleagues and how as peers we can encourage men to seek help when needed.
We would like to say a massive thank you to Andrew Walker, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Manager at Ardonagh Advisory, Ra-Venne Scholar, Senior Analyst at Goldman Sachs & Mark Russell, Performance Coach at Mark Russell Inspired Performance Coaching, for being so open and honest in sharing their experiences and insight.
Our key takeaways from the event are – mental health first aiders are a great way to foster supportive environments, accountability is one of the first steps to seeking help, understanding the difference between empathy vs sympathy is key and accommodating for people’s needs goes a long way…but most importantly it’s OK not to be OK!
Let’s keep the conversation going and ensure that everyone’s mental health is valued and supported.

"I found the panel to be very informative and it highlighted a lot of important aspects of the male experience that I hadn’t considered as a woman. I really enjoyed the differing backgrounds of the speakers and the dialogue throughout the Q&A. I’ve thought about what was discussed and how to implement changes in my own work environment, to de-stigmatise discussions about male mental health and accommodate for my peers."
